Sizing

Every listing states its own measurements. These are the US sizes those measurements correspond to, for when you are matching something you already own.

Pillows. Standard is 20 × 26 in, Queen 20 × 30 in, King 20 × 36 in. A pillowcase sized Standard will fit a Queen pillow tightly; buy the case to match the pillow, not the bed.

Height and firmness. Pillow listings state both. Side sleepers generally need more height than back sleepers, because the shoulder has to fill the gap. If you are between two, the lower one is the safer mistake.

Care

Memory foam. The cover comes off and goes in the machine; the foam core does not. Never soak or wring a foam core — it will not recover. Air it flat instead.

Cooling covers and sheets. Cool machine wash, gentle cycle, no bleach and no fabric softener. Softener coats the fibre and is the fastest way to stop a cooling fabric cooling.

Mulberry silk. Hand wash, or machine wash on a silk programme at 30 °C in a mesh bag, with a pH-neutral detergent. No softener, no tumble dryer, no direct sun. Silk dries quickly flat or on a line in the shade.

Comforters and quilts. Check the listing first — some are machine washable and some are not. Where a maker specifies dry cleaning, we say so on the page.

New bedding smell. Foam and some synthetics arrive with a faint manufacturing odour. Unwrap and air the item for 24 to 48 hours before use and it goes.
