Victoria's Secret Runway: Comeback or Just a Feather-Plucked Nostalgic Flop?

Victoria's Secret Runway: Comeback or Just a Feather-Plucked Nostalgic Flop?

Watching the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show with my teenage daughter was a blast from the past! This once legendary spectacle, which was like the Met Ball without clothing, has taken a nosedive into what I can only describe as... irrelevance.

Remember 1995? That magical time of Friends, plaid flannel shirts, and $1 coffee? That's when Victoria's Secret first tested the runway waters, charming audiences with cardigans and modest push-up bras. Fast forward to the extravagant years when wings became synonymous with the show—yes, actual wings made with over 800,000 feathers, turning models into so-called "Angels." They had their own (pink!) planes and the fashion show traveled the world with all the pageantry and cultural appropriation one could handle.

By 2018, though, the world moved on. With cultural shifts and the rise of body positivity, people packed up those Angels and the show was canceled. Flash forward to 2024, and we're back in the living room, grabbing popcorn (instead of grabbing a pitchfork).

Is the 2024 Victoria's Secret runway show a celebration of diversity, or just a sad echo of yesteryears? My daughter and I watched intently—or at least, I did while she multitasked with homework. Sure, there were models of different sizes, but was it genuine representation or just a sprinkle of tokenism?

The highlight of the night? Not the lingerie, but the music performances that caught my daughter's attention! "Who's that?" I asked when a familiar tune came on. "It's Lisa," she replied, clearly more interested in Blackpink nostalgia than Victoria's offerings. The models strutted through what looked like an abandoned airplane hangar. The big wings were back, but everything felt, well, dwarfed.

As the legendary Cher graced the stage, my daughter bowed out for a chemistry test—because even a chem test felt more important than a trip down a feather-lined memory lane.
