The dark side of fast fashion is no mystery, and its consequences on our planet hit home. Since its dawn, the fashion world has worshipped the natural realm, yet mass production is wreaking havoc on our land, air, water, and yes, even human rights! Hold tight for "The Ecology of Fashion," a mind-bending collaboration between The Academy of Natural Sciences and the Robert and Penny Fox Historic Costume Collection of the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design. This exhibit unravels the past and future of fashion's flirtation with nature through killer pieces by designers like Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta, curated by the brilliant Marina McDougall and Clare Sauro. Hurry, it's open only until August 31st!
What's the story behind this epic exhibit? Marina McDougall (MM): Brace yourself for a lightbulb moment! We joined forces with two major Drexel collections to unravel the complex challenges of fashion and sustainability. Our mission? To spark a fashion revolution by shedding light on the industry's environmental toll.
How does the exhibit showcase nature's influence on fashion? MM: Expect to be whisked through vivid vignettes that explore fashion's love affair with the environment. We aim to reconnect you with the roots of your clothes by bringing you closer to the agricultural processes that sustain us.
What's the sustainability angle here? MM: At the core of our sustainability dilemma is the dizzying speeds of fast and ultra-fast fashion. Our showstopper? The "Change" section, where you're invited to dive into hands-on workshops and arm yourself with info on how to make a change.
Got a favorite piece? Share the deets! Clare Sauro (CS): I'm in love with the denim masterpiece crafted by Nigerian designer NKWO, made from discarded textile waste—namely denim—from Western fashion giants. This piece is a jaw-dropping critique of fashion waste dumping in countries like Chile and Nigeria.
What do you hope we take away from this exhibit? CS: One word—HOPE! The exhibit is a treasure trove of futuristic materials like mycelium leather and bioplastics, along with practical tips like repairing and reusing your closet favorites. We want you leaving with a personal plan to shake up the fashion game!
